Identify Their Leadership Skills

There are many skills that can help make someone a good leader, from communication and public speaking to decision-making and initiative.  What skills do your team members bring to the table?

No two employees are the same, and no two employees will have identical leadership styles. Look for the talents that make your team members promising leaders and consider how you can help them continue to grow those strengths.

Give Them Feedback (Not Just Praise)

As important as it is to encourage your team members and recognize their accomplishments, you have to offer them more than just praise.

Providing constructive feedback when appropriate is necessary to help them grow in their roles. When giving feedback to a team member, set them on the right path—show them the tools they need to improve rather than simply saying, “That’s wrong.”

Besides providing mentorship and assistance in setting goals, you should empower your team members to set goals themselves as well.

While guidance can be instrumental in getting a person to start thinking about their goals, the ability to set them and stay accountable independently is an important skill for any future leader.
